Personal Training

Let’s be honest. Finding the time and motivation to exercise and keep fit is hard. Work, the commute, kids, family, friends, broken car, broken boiler, leaking roof, illness, lack of energy, switching broadband supplier, and on, and on – there’s always something going on in our increasingly busy lives to get in the way of keeping fit and healthy. Believe me, I’ve been there, I understand. Offering personal training in Macclesfield, I’m here to help.

As a coach who is a scientist by training, I’m here to tell you what the science tells us:

  1. You don’t have to do everything, you just have to commit to some meaningful goals.
  2. With a well designed training programme you can get significant gains in health, fitness and strength with surprisingly small amounts of focussed effort, providing you commit to it.

Your questions answered

It is now widely accepted in the medical and scientific communities that cardiovascular exercise (running, cycling, aerobic-based classes etc) isn’t the only thing we can do to improve our long-term health.

Strong muscles and joints are just as important as good cardiovascular fitness. Government guidelines now recommend weekly cardiovascular and strengthening exercises. Scientific evidence tells us that strength-based exercise can:

  • Delay the effects of ageing by:
    • Reducing muscle loss as we age (note that biologically speaking, ‘ageing’ starts at 25-30 years old!)
    • Improving our strength & balance
    • Minimising the impact of arthritis and joint wear and tear
  • Help improve posture
  • Help reduce lower back pain
  • Actually help improve cardiovascular health

‘Cardio’ has its place in health and fitness, but my job as a coach is to help you find ways to improve your fitness that you enjoy and that work for you – there are many approaches we can take that aren’t just based around burning lungs and feeling sick!

And, if you do fancy trying the lung-burn thing, a good coach will help you venture into it and build a love of that kind of exercise gradually and sustainably.

My approach to personal training is to use what we know from sport science and sports training to build athleticism, whether you take part in sport or not.

I like to take my clients on a journey in which we work together, not only to help you improve, but where you also learn about the skill, art and science of training and learn about how you personally respond physically and mentally to training.

After our first consultation session we build a plan from the appropriate starting point, ensuring that you’re sufficiently well conditioned for the programmes that we embark on. Over time we progress and regress exercises and programmes appropriately so that your strength and form is developed properly and sustainably for the long-term.

Training, coaching and programming will be a blend, according to your personal needs, of face-to-face and online coaching. Your personalised training plans are delivered and tracked using my web-app platform and we normally have contact every week, whether it be face-to-face, on the phone, or via email and messaging.

Every exercise I prescribe and session I programme is about giving you the biggest return for your time in the gym.

I provide face-to-face personal training in Macclesfield, and also online.

The most effective fitness training must always be tailored to you, the individual. I offer a highly consultative approach so that our sessions and training plans work for you, personally. We start by assessing your goals, your current fitness level, and your other life-pressures and commitments. We then build a plan from the appropriate starting point. I ensure that you have all the guidance and support you need to become fitter and healthier sustainably for today, next week, next month, next year
